My family had Thanksgiving dinner at my Uncles house this past Friday. While I was there he took me out to his shop and gave me some of his tools. I wound up with a belt/disk sander combo, a Delta scowl saw, and a Penn State Industries XL-40-2 lathe. I've been doing some searching on this lathe, and I'm lost. The lathe is missing some key parts. It doesn't have a banjo or a tool rest. It also doesn't have any type of MT on the head stock or tail stock. The head stock has 3/4"X16TPI threads. The Tailstock has a 30º center.

I guess my question is, do y'all know where I can look for accessories for this lathe? So far PSI's site and google have come up with nothing.

Taig and Sherline both make small 3 and 4 jaw chucks for the 3/4 -16 head stock. Do you have a picture? Taig is the cheapest of the 2 and will work fine. I believe one of the other cheaper lathe companies also make a 3/4-16 chuck and ther are adapters to increase the threads to 1-8 available. I would need to see the tailstock center to see if I recognize the taper. There are however taper charts for the MT sizes on the web.

I also had although I sold it a, 6in 4 jaw chuck, that was meant for the craftsman wood lathes that had the 3/4-16 threads. I have seen those for sale on Ebay and I believe grizzly had them for sale.

Jon found this http://books.google.com/books?id=ivsDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA3&lpg=PA3&dq=penn+state+industries+xl40&source=bl&ots=AEZJuoDnfb&sig=5ZmqdbY9rt3yOR711tp04rJP82k&hl=en&ei=gcjzTOrJMYjAsAOmn6mhCw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&sqi=2&ved=0CCUQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=penn%20state%20industries%20xl40&f=false

see if thats your lathe.

Mike,
I will try to take some pictures tonight. I should have taken some to go along with this post, but I didn't realize nothing would come up on google :-(

Here's an ad from a 1991 issue of American Woodworker (bottom right corner of page) that may give you a little more info. I would call Penn State and ask if they still stock any of the accessories...

Thanks all,
Yeah, it looks like I will have to call Penn State to see if they have any accessories left and/or an instruction manual.
