My parents have been generous enough to empty out and let me setup my shop in their back patio sun-room. Dad recently installed 3 4 bulb 4' fluorescent lighting. We got the room emptied out and I started moving all my tools in from the garage where I was previously setup. The area I was fitting into before was roughly a 5'x7' area. Now I'm in a 9'x14'. Not sure what to do with all the room. I've been really excited about this the past two days. Unlike sharing the space in my Dad's garage shop with him this feels more like my setup and shop now despite it being a loaner room until I can get something setup over at my house. I am very grateful for my folks. I am still in the process of setting things up and getting a little more organized than I was before. I really want to work on getting some sort of better dust collection process going. Curiously I am looking for any feed back about this shop setup. Comments, Critique, Suggestions and etc.

What are you using to hold your tools to the side of the metal cabinet with? I haven't seen that kind of holder before.

Either you are very tall or I am missing something. The lathe on top of the black cabinate looks very high to be comforatable. Also without a toe kick on the cabinate how do you stand without leaning forward and straining your back?

Looking good Larry. Maybe replace the black cabinet with a bench for your feet to go under to save back fatigue. Build a riser on top for glue bottles and sandpaper trays and, other items used for turning. Your folks ARE great.

I am sure it won't be clean for long, before you know it the chips will be flying! hehehe. I will have to stop over this weekend if I have a chance to check it out man. Looks good from the pictures.

I see the closet, but where's the shop! LOL, just kidding. Bigger is always better. Before you know it you'll have it filled and wanting more space.

+1 on the lathe looks real high. Too high. Is that it's final position or are you just moving stuff in?

Hehe, The pictures are all of the shop after I got everything roughly setup. I hadn't actually done any work yet. In the last few days only turned a small amount, used the bandsaw for a short bit. Vacuum up what little there was. It will definitely get messier. You should have seen my last setup. Almost an inch of sawdust on the floor. :) As for the lathe that top of the black cabinet is about 40" high. I am 5' 11" and to be honest the height the lathe is at currently feels very comfortable. I only lean in just a tiny bit so I can get real close and eyeball what I am working on. Maybe here soon I'll get a snapshot of me standing there turning something for you all to gander at. :) I may still move some things around I have a few mobile cart/cabinets I want to bring it. Once I get some wood I might still build a lathe bench but it will be about that height. Whenever I get an air compressor I'll just blow the blinds clean. :)

The recommended (suggested) ideal height for a lathe is for the centers to be the same height as your elbow. But whatever works!

Nice setup!

I will take the suggestion into consideration and try something like that to see how it feels. I've just from my brief experience so far it has felt reasonably comfortable to me at this height and lets me get close for good visibility. I have tried it a little lower and I feel I tend to lean over and arch my back more than I'd like. Plus without having glasses right now since the broke a while back I prefer to just lean over a little and get a nice close view. :)

Those are a bunch of rare earth magnet units that Sears had on clearance last year. I'll double check the name of them maybe they can be found around still. But here in the Columbus/surrounding area my folks and I bought up all the remaining stock at the stores and outlet stores. :) I even got the managers of a few stores to drop the price even more since they were on clearance. I told them hey it is just taking up space in your store, you want them moved take more off and I'll wipe out your whole display. :)
