I am am realtively new wood turner and brand new pen turner - I have turned 8 pens now and am learning a lot and having fun!
I am starting to get a small collection of drills and bushings and can see that inventory control may be a problem - how do you keep the bushings identified and sorted for the kinds of pens they fit?

Welcome from Grand Rapids and welcome to the addiction. Organization is always tough when you get into this. I have a cabinet with small drawers labeled for each of the bushings.

Welcome to the group from Wichita Falls, TX!~ You should visit the library section, tons of information in there! But, to answer you question, we all have different ways, i keep mine in the baggies/or little plastic containers that you can get at HF. Some use shower hooks hanging from a dowel rod above their lathe, some keep them in divided lidded compartments.

Keith,
Welcome to the group and the vortex! This is a great place for resourcing for help and the library is full of great stuff.
As for your question on organization, I'm still working on my skills for that area. I try to stay with the kits that use the same size bits I have already purchased or in my larger fractional set. The bushings are placed in small plastic containers with labels on them for what kits they are used for. You will find that some of the same bushings can be used for a couple other kits.

Post some photos of the pens you've completed when you get a chance.

Welcome to pen turning. You'll find alcohol would have been less addicting im afraid. but to the bushings. I have seen many tips on this sight on that very subject. i personally keep mine in labeled bags hanging on a peg board. would like to have drawered cabinet, but space wont allow it.

Welcome from Mount Pleasant Mi. As for storage, I have a 48 compartment screw organizer, when ever I get a new set of bushing, I peel the label off the baggy that they come in and tape that to one of the empty drawers. Then I just just store the bushings in that compartment.

I put barrel trimmer sleeve in the same compartment as the bushings as well.

Welcome Keith, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. You mention that you have read some of the site, be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

Welcome, Keith.

I have a set mismash of bins, drawers, etc. I keep the bushings together with their respective kits in the appropriate bin or drawer.
