Greetings. I've been a woodworking "hacker" for about 7 years. Turned my first pen at the Indianapolis Woodworking show in January and that got me hooked. Very smart of the vendor to offer free pen to unsuspecting attendees.:) Recently bought a Jet Mini lathe and started down the bumpy road of pen turning. I've attached a photo of my favorite two pens so far. Still lots to learn, but I've found a lot of good information on this site. Also working on my photography skills. Thanks.

Welcome from a fellow Hoosier. I bet you didn't realize what you were getting yourself into when you turned that "free" pen and the woodworking show. Oh well, as long as you enjoy it. There are worse addictions then penturning. Your pens look pretty good too.

Welcome to the zoo. I gotta ask, are you interested in being on the email list for the Indianapolis chapter's meeting notice? We meet every other month and the next one is in May at WoodTurningz north of Indy in Westfield. If you are interested pm me and I will get you added to the list.

Welcome Daryn. We have a local chapter Southern In, KY, TN that will be meeting on April 25th. in Brooks KY. Exir 121 off of I-65. If you'd like to meet some people from IAP who are great pen makers you should come. It starts at 10:00a.m. There is also a thread on this in the local chapter section. I really hope you can make it, as we always like meeting new people.

Welcome Daryn, from sunny southern California. I see you've already got two local chapter groups to enjoy. It's always good to have more "hands on" help as long as you learn. I'm still learning.

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.
