Hi,

I am just now starting in on this hobby. I have made a few already and of course friends think I am the best pen turner in the world.

They also think I know how to carve beautiful pipes. For a reality check I post pictures of my pipes on some pipe smoker's forums. Those folks are kind enough to be very directly honest about my skills.

I hope we have the same kind of interaction here. If everyone tells me I am great I won't learn a dag gum thing.

BTW, the difference between a pipe smoker and a pipe carver is that the pipe smoker can quit if he wants to. Is pen turning like that also?

Welcome Douglas, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

Welcome from Michigan. Yes it is, lol.

CaptG & Ted,

Two of the best years in my life where spent in Houghton & Chassell while attending MTU.

But I sure don't miss the man eating mosquitos of the UP.

Welcome to the forum. An aside, a pipe smoker doesn't have time to be a carver, a pipe smoker already has a fulltime job:biggrin:.
