My name is Ted (Obviously) from Fair Oaks, California (Near Sacramento) Iv'e been turning for about 2 months now. I enjoy turning pens, bowls, mushrooms, fruit, reel seats, cork grips and such. I use a Shopsmith Mark V so I also enjoy doing all the repairs and maintenance that come with the machine (It's a requirement for owning one.) Just doing slimlines now, throwing all the mony I can at it every paycheck, and still trying to master that CA finish. I'm happy with 2 pens out of 10 so far. Really impressed with alot of the pens shown here!

We love pictures... :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Hi neighbor, welcome to the group. I live in Redding, just go north an hour, turn left at the oak tree by the mailbox and you're at my house. ; ) I like those SS's too.

Welcome

I live in Santa Maria, CA and if I ever head up to sacramento area to visit a friend up there I might be abe to stop by and give some pointers

Welcome, Ted. Nice to have you here. There is a local chapter up in northern CA you might check on.

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome

Welcome Ted, from sunny Florida. Great bunch of talented woodturners here in IAP. I have been known to supply some nice pen blanks to quite a few of them.
