Hello all.
My name is Ulises. I live in Monterrey, Mexico. I am a professional musician (guitarist)
My hobby is to build scale wooden sailing ships. I have a feeling that wood pen turning is very closely related to wooden ship building; they are both wood and ship building sometimes requires a bit of lathe work.
I am a total newbie in pen turning. I just ordered a starter kit that includes everything to make my first pens: lathe, press, blanks, hardware, tools, etc.
I bought some books from Amazon to make me started. I have never used a lathe.
Ok... I'll stop here. Don't want to bore anybody.

Hope to make good friends here, as I have made in my shipmodeling forums.

Best wishes to all.

Ulises

Welcome Ulises. One of the forums on here is "Other Things We Make". I'll bet that many people on here would like to see some pictures of the sailing ships you build to scale.

Welcome to the group.

Welcome! I am in San Marcos, TX near the San Marcos Outlet Malls. If you every come up here, be sure to let me know so we can meet up!

I only post this since we get a LOT of visitors from Mexico to the mall, many from Monterey.

Thanks all for your warm welcomes!
@Seamus: I will post some pics of my ships very soon :)
@Curtis Mesquite Man: I go to San Antonio every year around mid February to the IPMS (International Plastic Modelers Society) model contest. That's the closest to San Marcos I will get in the near future.

Bien venido, Ulises! I have been to Monterey several times. It is a beautiful city and I love the saddle back mountain.

Tomas

Thanks again, all. Can't wait to receive my equipment and start turning! :)
I've been through the tutorials on this site and WOW! Just perusing the first two opened a world of posibilities.
Thanks again all.

Welcome from Pennsylvania.. one thing you will hear a lot from the wealth of knowledge on here is "Keep your tools SHARP" and if your going to buy chisels buy better quality ones it will save you A LOT of headaches later. Good luck and cant wait to see some pics of boats and pens. Len

Thank you Len! Any advise as to what brand of chisels are good/best?
I have no experience at tool sharpening, except the occasional knife honing I do in my shipbuilding, but I've never tried sharpening a curved edge. But I'm not afraid of it! Can you recommend a good sharpening kit/method?

Thanks in advance!

I would get the sharpening JIG setup to sharpen but the wife wont let me spend the money... lol Take a look at these: This is an inexpressive one that might work, I have never used it: http://www.pennstateind.com/store/DIAMOND4.html
This one is more top of the line but have been told works VERY GOOD:http://www.tormek.com/en/
The way I do mine, I am disabled and have NO extra money to buy a sharpening system is I use a bench grinder with the lowest grit wheel I could get and do it by hand on that, and then where possible I fine tune by hand and for that I use a hand file. The Gouges I just use the bench grinder with very very light touch on any chisel. The main thing is DO NOT overheat the chisel to where it turns blueish black.
As far as a good brand check some of the sites listed on here Penn State Industries, Rockler Woodworking, Craft Supplies USA, also talk to Johnny Goodin, Sorry John if I messed up your name he actually makes some stuff and the stuff he has is GREAT. He goes by johnnycnc on here. Some people like Benjamin's Best Chisels I have never used them the set I have I got at Grizzly, I got a whole set for like 55.00 and have been using it ever since. Good luck, oh the web sites for penn state industries "PSI" and Craft supplies have just about everything you need. Good luck and if there is anything else just ask. I expect others to give opinions also so they might have more or better information for you. I should have said it all depends on what you are planning on turning to figure out what chisels will work best.

I hope I made a good choice. It's been already shipped to my Texas address and expected to get there the 19th. From there to my home in Mexico may take another week, in the mean time I am learning about the craft as much as I can. I have made several pens in my mind already

Nice setup the only suggestions I would make is get atleast 1 extra pen mandrel of both "A" and "B" types, I have always gottin extra bushings sets for all the diff pen styles I have made, also if possible check out some different chisels see which one works best and feels the best in your hands while using it. Oh and when you get it make sure you sharpen the chisels before you even start they dont come as sharp as you will want to have them or need them for some different blanks. sorry it took me so long to get back havent been on computer in a while.
