Dear all:

I know I could probobly find all the answers to my questions if I keep digging, but I figured it would be just as easy to ask, rather than spend two hours looking through the forum that I could spend working on the lathe. :)

I just purchased a Delta 46-460 lathe. A nice step-up from my HF12x20, which was a great starter, but I now want to get into bowls, peppermills, and other items and wanted something with a bit more power. I also want to start drilling on the lathe.

I am looking at purchasing the accessories that I would need to do all of the above. I am thinking I want to get a Nova Midi chuck for use with bowls and the pin chuck jaw set for square pen blanks. I would also like to get the cole jaws to easily finish the back of bowls.

I am needing someone familiar with all of the above to help me determine if those links below will all work with the Nova Midi Chuck...the website does not really say they are compatible with the midi. Or maybe the nova jaws are the same?

Pin Jaws: http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Chucks___Teknatool___Teknatool_Pin_Jaws___tekna_pin?Args=

Cole Jaws: http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/s...natool_Mini_Cole_Jaws___tekna_mini_cole?Args=

Are there other things I should consider? Is the nova midi able to be used with the reversable function of the 46-460?

Thanks for any comments and/or advise!
Kevin

PS - I am also planning on purchasing a collet chuck to use with round blanks and other things...

You can use full-sized chucks with your Delta, so a Midi won't be necessary.

The Delta 46-461 chuck is really the Nova G3 chuck with a set screw for holding the chuck while running the lathe in reverse.

I bought the SuperNova 2 and love it. I have the Delta 46-460 and rarely ever use the reverse. You will be able to use all Nova jaws with the Midi, G3, or Supernova 2.

Hope this helps.

Eric,

That does help - thanks! Would you suggest the full size chuck or is that overkill?

I did a lot of research before buying the full size. Most of the really good turners on these forums used the full size on their Delta & said it handled it fine. I found the same to be true. This Delta 46-460 is really a shortened version of a mid-sized lathe. It has more than enough power.

The full size chuck gives you two advantages: It handles any size project that can fit on your lathe and you can use it on other (larger/upgraded) lathes.

You will need to purchase the 1" x 8 tpi insert that will adapt it to your lathe. If you use it on a full size lathe, you simply unscrew the insert.

One thing I forgot to mention; I believe the Delta 46-461 is already threaded as 1" x 8 tpi, which means you wouldn't be able to use it on larger equipment.

I use my SuperNova 2 for everything, including drilling pen blanks on the lathe. (Using pin jaws like the ones in your link.) You can get some pretty good prices on Amazon.

Good luck & enjoy!

In answer to your original question, yes those jaws well fit the midi or the full size. Teknatool (Nova) jaws fit all their chucks. I have a SuperNova 2 and the midi, I use them both on my Delta 46-460. If I could only have one I'd opt for the bigger one for the reasons stated above. The SN2 also uses a "key" to expand and contract the jaws. Lot's of people prefer that over the tommie bars which the midi has.
