Well I sprung for a Jet VS Mini today. My PSI lathe has given me my last fit. The Jet Mini is larger, quieter, and smoother running. Only one problem... no 60 degree live center and I have a couple pens to get done before next Tuesday - Bosses day. I think I'm screwed. The woodworking store didn't think to stock them until now. They're ordering some, but two weeks before they get them in. I think I'm going to try to make it work with the 30 degree center for these two pens, but I know that's asking for trouble.

So where are you all getting your centers from?

Never done it as I have a 60° LC. If I were doing mine, I would knock off something in the vicinity of 2mm...about 3/32". If you have the time, why don't you email Paul in OKC and ask him. He has posted that he grinds the point off his 30° tip and he is a machinist so he should have a good idea about how much of the tip to remove.

I just looked at my several mandrels and noticed that the centering dimples are all different. The right amount to take off of your tip may depend upon how your mandrel is drilled??
 
They are out of stock, I just went to their site and checked. I ordered a dial indicator from them couple weeks ago and wanted to order a dead center also they were out of stock back then.
 
Thanks Randy. That's exactly what I did. I filed off a small amount and tested the fit until it seemed right. It ended up being about 2mm from the tip. It's working OK for now, which is great because it takes the pressure off. I'll order one up from the site Steve referenced. I really appreciate all the great info.

As I posted somewhere else on this topic, this is what I have done, and done it for as long as I have owned my lathe (7-ish years) with no problem. Had to replace the tip once and just filed of the tip. Took off about 1/16" or a little less. Start off with a little at a time.
