My Uncle has been turning pens for about two years now and my dad started about 6 months ago! Turned my first pen at my dad's and love the lathe. Dad suprised me and got me a Excelsior Mini Lathe for Christmas. I have had lots of fun with the lathe so far have and turned about 6 pens. Learning on everyone of them!
Thank you everyone for all the great information. This site if full of many ideas and secrets that are great help when starting out!!

Always glad to welcome another Texan . I am not sure where you are at in Texas but be sure to check out the local chapters. If there is one anywhere near you it would pay you to attend a meeting.

Welcome Joe! Lots of other Texas folks here to help out too! Join in the fun and makes some pens!

Below are links to some threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome to the madness Joe. You may want to consider attending one of the get to gethers that we have around the state. One coming up in San Marcos (Central Texas), also in the FTW area (Bubbasville), here in Houston (Greater Houston) and I'm sure there are others too.
Check the Local Chapters at the top of the page for one near you.
Again, Welcome
Vern

Ah...the memories Zentner's Steakhouse...used to travel from Robert Lee to San Angelo just for lunch....

I saw "Concho Joe" and thought, that reminds me of the Concho Valley and San Angelo, my hometown. As I read further, I see that you are from there. I sure miss Henry's Mexican resturant, nobody makes Chili Relleno's like Henry's. We get back about 4-6 times a year, depending on graduations, weddings, etc.

Welcome to the madness!

Nice to have you here! now first things first. Just start posting pics we all like pics. Therefor start working on the ideas and I say have the pics up by end of sun set.
