Glad I found this place!...I was reading the "I wish I knew before" thread and have decided that I will go have a chat and join our local woodturning club in town...there is way to much going on to try and muddle through all this by reading alone...looking forward to chatting with everyone and sharing my adventures along the way as I get started...

Is there a pen kit that uses a .7mm tip? Like a F-301 Zebra pen (you can google Zebra pen to see them)... ( https://www.zebrapen.com/product-category/pen-type/pen-type-ball-point/) or use this if links are allowed...

Also I have seen some say cheap pen kits are the devil...where can I look at good quality pen "parts" that are not plated junk...

Thanks for letting me join!

Welcome. There are basically 3 refill types used in Kit pens. The Cross type is used in slimmer pens usually in 7mm tubes. Parker type used in the majority of ball points and rollerballs used in the pens with caps. If I had seen this thread this morning I could have looked at the refill rack at Staples and compared the Cross and Zebra refills to see how close they are. From the online pictures the two look similar but Zebra could easily have made them different to keep people from using anything else in their pens. If they are interchangeable you could use them in any kit using the Cross refill. Great thing about this pen making pastime is adapting the pens to suit you. Adapting to fit a particular refill is one.

You can learn a lot here by reading to prepare you for when you go to see the local turners so don't let that stop you from exploring the site. The Library is being organized to fit this new software so check it often for added tutorials on how to do nearly anything pen related.

Thanks for the welcome...I see Cross has some .5mm and .7mm refills so that will be perfect for what I have in mind for my first pens...as long as they will fit the kits...that's where it is a little confusing...I didn't see where any particular kit said it used a particular refill...will have to do some more digging...

Welcome to IAP. I see that you read the "I wish I knew this earlier" article. You are doing the right thing by joining a local wood turning club and learning some basics from a few with experience. When you get a pen or two done, show us some of your work.

When traveling, I often get the question "Do you work at the casino's?" I always reply: I am from Tunica BC! BEFORE Casinos. :D Where one of the Casinos is located, I used to duck hunt there on occasion. I haven't been too fond of them for doing that! ;)
