New Gouge and new use for dead centers

Just finished making a handle and stainless steel ferrule for a gouge I picked up this past week end at the Virginia Woodturning Symposium. Over all length is 23 inches.

Also discovered a new use for my old rusty dead lathe centers that have been stashed for years. Cut a four notches on the cup ring and use them as live centers on the headstock. Make the notches with a dremel or chainsaw file. They work similar to a safety drive. Turned the handle using the one in this photo and really liked the idea and performance of the new center

I just learned the trick of a dead center drive last night. The Tidewater Turners hosted Alan Lacer at their monthly meeting. What he does is to take a cup drive dead center that was originally designed to be lubricated and used in the tail stock. He grinds down the outer edge so it is more sharp and then uses a hand file to put in three or four spikes like you did to enable drivability. Then you can use tailstock pressure to provide slippage if necessary.

Alan said he uses it to teach newbies how to use a skew without the fear of that nasty catch. With this drive center, if you catch it just stops and doesn't come off the lathe at you!!

That presentation last night was the most informative that I have ever seen. If anyone gets a chance to see him, don't pass it up!
