Well done over the tears I have always matched the grain with the nib extended and photographed the same. In handing a pen to anyone I extend the nib and suggest not to play with a pen further until I explain the way to use it. Blundering ,well meaning people sure can wreak havoc on a pen eg pulling on a pen cap rather than unscrewing etc. My two cents.

I was in Lost Wages several years ago. The crosswalk signs were unique- Walk, Don't Walk, and 8-to-5 You Won't Make it.

I usually match the grain with the tip extended, but its very much a personal choice - both work.
