I have been woodworking for about 35 years, turning pens, duck calls and turkey calls for about 12 years. This looked like a good place to gather and share information. I like to work with exotic woods and burls. I harvest most of my burls from wild cherry and white oak found locally. My real job is estimating and plan digitizing for a large site contractor, this gives me access to a lot of found wood.

Nice and welcome! Where exactly do you live in Alabama. I used to live in Butler and have family in Thomasville, Theodore, Gilbertown... and a few other places!

I live about 25 miles south east of Huntsville on the Tennessee River.

Welcome from southern California!

I'm putting a few links in here for reference –
This link has postings by different pen turners on what they wish they had known earlier:

This link tells of some "out of the box" tools/aids for pen turners http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66178

This one is a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't. http://content.penturners.org/articl...9/Acronyms.pdf
