Does anyone use this 3 jawed chuck for drilling their (round/square) pen blanks or stopper blanks?

Does it work ok?

2" Mini Lathe Chuck with MT-1 Shank

We are down in KS for a few months before heading to TX for a few months, I have my mini lathe with me, but dont have room for a drill press to drill with.

Wanted to get feedback before heading to pick one up tomorrow.

Thanks

My guess would be that the jaws are not very big (or big enough). I drill almost everything on my lathe and I use either my collets or my PSI pen blank jaws for my "C" four jaw chuck.

That is a small metal chuck. It lacks the ability to support itrms more than about 1 inch long.

The price is attractive, but function is limited.

Most flexible is turning between centers and use of a collet chuck. See Don Ward's new book.

I just purchased one of these for some small piece holding. The bore isn't large enough to hold anything over 3/8 or an inch or so. Not sturdy enough to drill with. I would recommend getting a barracuda (or simialr style chuck) for more support if you want to drill.

I bought the 4 in 4 jaw scroll chuck and a back plate to fit my lathe. I turned the backplate to fit on my lathe and on my trial cut on a piece of brass it was under .0005 oor. or less than a thou. It barely wiggled at all on the dial indicator as I turn it when checkin. Expect to pay a hundred dollars plus shipping. The 4 in model has a .87 bore so you can fit quit a rounded blank deep inside for stability when drilling.
