A friend of a friend told me he had a lathe brand new in the box and was willing to sell it for $60. He got it from his dad and new nothing about it. I figured for $60 i would take a gamble on it and bought it. It turned out to be a HF 14x60 with a 7 inch sanding disk built in and sells for $140 new. So price wise i got a good deal. The lathe has 14 inches for throw and a 40 inch spread between centers so size wise it will do what i want wich is bowls and walking sticks and mabey eventually pool ques. Two issues i've found so far is there is alot of slop in the tail stock and when i tighten the tail stock center to the piece the center of the lathe wants to flex. as far as the flexing goes i can prevent this by either strapping or bolting it to my work bench. however i dont think there is anything i can do for the slop in the tail stock. I have not turned anything with it yet. So that being said what is your oppinion. This lathe is'nt cast iron its frame is square tubing and the base is sheet metal so its kinda flimsy. My question is should i go ahead and try to use this lathe or should i sell it and try to make another $15 or $20 from it. Does anybody have any experiences with this lathe? Thanks!
