I have been turning pens for about two years now.

With the recent ice storm, I now have plenty of wood to experiment with, and would like to turn bowls. I have a Rikon 70-100 lathe with no add-ons. Do I need to add anything new to the mix, such as a multi-jaw chuck?

There are several different models of multi-jaw chucks out there, but I do not know what I need.

Some assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brad

I'm chime in with my two cents worth. A multi-jaw chuck will make your life easier but isn't totally necessary as they were turning bowls way before they came into existence. As far as what multi-jaw chuck to get, well I'm sure you'll get lots of answers and most on the market work quite well, so I won't put on brand over another. What I would recommend is getting a chuck that uses a key as opposed to the tommy bars. The reason for this is with the tommy bars you almost need three hands to get everything set. A key makes things so much easier. I'm sure other will chime in shortly so I'll stop for now. Good luck and have fun, Bob I.

no, you don't NEED a chuck..before there were chucks, people turned bowls...but a chuck is very helpful..how big a bowl? buy the best 4 jaw chuck you can afford with the most optional jaws for when you get better & better and want to try new things...Try Nova, vicmark and psi
