I'm working from home and seeing patients by video. This is actually a great thing and I am considering signing up with a company that does telepsychiatry full time from my experience here.

My question to the collective: The video software Mother Mayo is using has the ability to put in a virtual background. The one I'm using is a library with filled bookshelves lining the walls. Boring and staid, just like recommended. However, the software has as an example a tropical beach scene with waving palms and rolling waves. Do you think a run of the mill patient would appreciate seeing their psychiatrist coming to them from tropical paradise?

Or should I upload a picture of my bench with the band saw and lathe, just to show them what I'd rather be doing than working?

Don't know if a generalization can be made, but maybe presenting your patients with a familiar background (like your actual office setting) would be the least stressful/most therapeutic. I am CPA, but I once played a doctor on TV :)

No beach scene for sure !!

I think the background should be simple, simple, SIMPLE ... I don't even like the idea of bookshelves ... too distracting.

I am a book aficionado and I would be focusing on the selection of titles and speculating on content instead of paying attention to the service I am being billed for !!

Not your shop either ... some people are intimidated by machines and sharp things.

I'd recommend simple but professional. A beach scene would not instill "professionalism" IMO. Clean, neat, simple... "clinical." A few book, a few pictures, desk, etc.

Note: Many moons ago I did work for 5 years as an inpatient and partial hospital therapist. As a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist: Sweats and clean t-shirt; as a partial hospital Drug and Alcohol Counselor: Button down shirt and tie (yuk).

Tom! Show him a picture of your BACKYARD! See what he thinks. It has my vote. I'm thinking a mural of it in my garage would be therapeutic for me. 😁

How about this one Chuck?

Or this one? Took it today.

I've got more but I'll have to do some digging.

A number of years ago I read a book that had a big impression on me. It was called "Dress for Success." What do your patients expect when they see you? Do you wear a white lab coat or something else? Why? I think a background as close to your normal office surroundings would be best. I definitely would object to the beach scene. I would also hate to see you cut a finger off while providing me therapy.;)

I agree with the others as having a professional background such as an office setting. I think it would make patients more comfortable seeing you in a professional setting.

I had to read that in 1985 while training at NCR. I never forgot that socks are supposed to match the pants not the shoes. :)

I guess I had it pretty easy in my working world. I'm color blind so basically all my clothes were either blue or brown. On occasion I'd get things messed up and would only find out when I asked the lady at the airline counter if my shirt matched my pants. It only happened a couple of times but boy was it embarrassing. When I traveled, which was 4 days a week normally, my wife always made sure that when I packed, even if I blew it, the colors and pants/shirt went together.

When I was much younger the accepted fashion was blue suit black shoes and blue socks. Now everyone wears tan shoes with blue suits... and no socks. Will the insanity ever cease?

I read some fashionista that said the socks should match the shirt... never could get myself to do that either... blue pants, blue socks, tan pants, tan socks.... I really don't like to wear white socks with levi's... usually put on blue socks.. old stick in the mud I guess.

I have only Black or White socks and 90% are boot socks. Since you'll never see my socks it doesn't matter what color they are. The thing that still throws me is how many times I see men wearing tan pants with a Black belt. That one I don't get at all. Since the main stay of my wardrobe is boot cut Wranglers my belt matches my boots. Not sure what I'm going to do when I actually have to put on a pair of dress slacks. Do they rent dress shoes? 🤔

We had this discussion at our ministerial. Do we stream from our living rooms or from an empty sanctuary? The first communicates a more personal, we're in this together attitude, the second a more professional, business as usual, things will be normal perspective.

Yeah, I decided to go with the library scene. The shelves are in the middle distance so it could be a bunch of Dr. Seuss books, for all you can see. Mayo relaxed their need for ties, so I was first one to drop the disgusting things. I can get away with a bit more informality as a psychiatrist, but i'm pretty sure they'd draw the line at wearing the battered t-shirts I wear to turn in.

I participated in a networking event on ZOOM and one of the participants used an abstract background. It was OK except when she moved her head the background cut off part of her head.

I was in my shop with a mill and lathe in the background.
