I am working on my first winged bowl. Do I need to round the wings or should I leave then straight. My inclination is to leave them straight. Any thoughts?
My thought on the wings would be to possible cut them slightly to look a little more organic and not totally straight cut.....but not rounded.
Perhaps just trim / angle the wide wing so it is not looking like it is 90 degrees square to the bowl.
Jamie Donaldson is coming to a turning club near here and will be doing a workshop on winged bowls....sounds pretty cool.
Also if you get a chance to see or take a workshop with Mike Sorge (Virginia) you should enjoy it. He does lots of geometric turnings.......at high speed!
I like it the way it is now, but if you decide to modify the corners, do it with a sander, not on the lathe. Corners are easy to tear out if you get the slightest catch. A sander will give you a softer look if that's what you want.
