I got this from a friend. We are not sure what wood it is. It is covered in wax. Any ideas?

The wax makes it a bit tough but with the color and the bark inclusions I'd think it is some type of maple. Too red to be big leaf IMHO

If there weren't bark inclusions looking at the color and the exterior I would also have thrown jarrah out as an option

The timber has the appearance of Tasmanian Eucalypt. It is most often waxed and can be awesome or under dried a mess. Anyway it has an angry appearance good luck with it.

Kind regards Peter.

I was going to say Jarrah as well.

Eric,

Having suggested Euc Burl I thought I would check my stash. It definitely is not Euc Burl bashed off three pics flash in unsteady hand.

There is a moral to this reply note the wet weight I paid for the present weight is 2.5 kgs a loss of 1.2 kgs or around 2.5lbs something to consider sobering huh.

My contention is if you can buy precut blanks the price then as a customer is miles in front
not only can you almost see inside your blanks prospects wax covers a multitude of sins.

Kind regards Peter.

:confused: My first question would be where did your friend get it from?? If it was a local wood from MI. I would say it is in the Acer group of Maples. It's very hard to tell what a burl is because of the wild grain and odd colors. Also the wax never helps in identifacation nor does looking at a photo. It's the bark that makes me think it's Maple, if it was obtained in MI. Do you have a Forestry Agency near you that you could take it to? They usualy have a lot of wood samples. It could realy be a lot of things. Jim S

The bark looks more like black cherry than maple.
Methinks you need to slice a small bit off to display the inside.
When you do, note the smell, internal color, and how (if) it changes in sunlight.
Face and endgrain photos would help.

Can't quite tell from the photo, you need to send me a sample so I can examine and test it to be sure; about 3/4" x 3/4" x 5" ought to be enough for destructive testing.

With this new picture I would be confident in saying either jarrah, salmon gum or eucalyptus burl...all from Australia I believe......lucky to have him as a friend
