I am in need of a MT1 Mandrel as the one I got from the Local WC is for the lack of a better term warped if you do the standard test of hand rotating the head stock (no machined flat surface) with the tail stock disengaged the end of the mandrel is rock steady, points right to the live center I have. well I turned my second pen yesterday and following suggestions from this forum I rotated the blank on the mandrel. several times during the turning process. and it turned out better than the first but still has a off center look to the cap end.

So I took all bushings and spacers off along with the nut, and had it set up without any thing on the mandrel, put the short tool rest about an 1/8th of an inch away and set a straight edge up to the mandrelturning it over by hand. Low and behold right where the end of the Atlas blank would be is a warped section a half inch section where the rod bends out and back in like this ____/~\____ .

As our local wood craft is out of the kit and rods, I am looking for recommendations on what to use for a MT1 lathe till I can afford a better lathe.

The mandrel should unscrew from the 1MT arbor. You could make your own mandrel from Letter D size drill rod and tap threads for screwing into the arbor and for the brass nut. Drill rod is available from places like Enco and MSC. Here is the link to MSC:

Do a good turn daily!

I would recommend just buying replacement rod if you don't have the tap to begin with.

I am assuming that the rod threads are the same whether your morse taper is #1 or #2. Someone please confirm or tell me I am mistaken please.

Berea, CSUSA, Woodcraft, PSI, and all the distributors like Arizona Silhouette, BeartoothWoods, Woodturningz, etc. should have those in stock.

What Tracy almost says is that Woodcraft uses a different thread on the arbor end of their mandrels than do the other guys so you cannot use mandrels from other manufacturers with Woodcraft arbors!! [:(!][:(!][:(!]

the MT1 drive center fits perfect with no rocking, yet the WC arbor rocks and has a wear band around it after turning two pens. the black oil quenching color has warn off. so I am thinking it is a bad arbor?
