Dyed maple burl, like it better than plastic camo blanks.

Greetings from Nebraska! I think your pens are great, especially the dyed wood. I have a lot of figured maple with birds eyes and chatoyance that I think would look good with some color but I haven't done any experimenting to come up with a method yet. Would you share what you used and how you did it? Thanks, Dave (egnald)

Been dying bowls for years and just recently started doing pens. Use Fiebings alcohol based leather dyes, tried other brands but this is my preferred. For solid colors sand the blank to 1200 grit then mount on a mandrel with non stick bushings. Wear nitrile gloves, lathe on lowest rpm, wipe on the dye with a paper towel and let it dry. When dry to touch fold a paper towel and burnish with light pressure at abt 1000 rpm until no more dye is transferred to the paper. Apply additional coats using the same method to darken the color or sand back with 1200 grit to lighten.
Nice effect on burl or curly maple is to leave the blank heavy to allow for sanding back to the desired finished dimension and use one coat of black (or darker color) then sand back to remove all but the color trapped in the end grain of the curly then apply color of choice. I use these TransTint dyes for an antique curly maple look using the same methodology.
Let the blank dry completely then surface finish as desired. The first coat may transfer the dye so gingerly apply to lock in the color, then continue as usual. I use Gluboost on pens and the first coat seals well.
Tried to be brief but complete, get in touch if you have any questions. Hope you'll give it a try.
