Here's a few pens I did this weekend. Please give me your opinions on good bad and ugly. The first one is a Traditional fountain pen turned from a rotted monkey pod branch I found. I dried it and tried soaking it in Minwax wood hardener. It turned well by definitely not enough to be "stabilized." It wound up having a big void from some critters right down to the tube so I stuffed it with wood shavings and CA. The second on is an Traditional fountain in Ebony. I had a time with it too. I don't know if ebony is always this hard or if I just got a crappy batch of wood. The first blank exploded right at the end of turning, the second piece had huge cracks running through the ends after squaring it up and the third piece I thought was gonna blow out but held together. The third pen is my first time turning acrylic. Thanks Mike for some really cool blanks. Let me know what y'all think!

Nice work. Was bullet pen in photos 5 &6 made for USN Chief?

Yes DrD it is for a Chief! Me. Kugelschreiber advertised the blanks here and when I saw them I thought they look like a Chief's heritage anchor.

Boy, do I wish, but sadly no. Now my maternal uncle Jack M. Davis retired as either a Command Master Chief or a Master Chief; he served in WWII, Korea, and 3 tours in Vietnam. As I was teaching an ISO-14000 Lead Auditor course at NAS Patuxent River, one of my students, a Master Chief, remembered his dad serving with my uncle Jack in Vietnam. The class I was teaching had a USN Lt. Commander, this Master Chief, 3 Senior Chiefs, 2 Chiefs and 2 USMC Gunnery Sergeants. Word got around, and before I left they held a totally unofficial ceremony, making me an honorary Chief - I hold that as the highest honor I have ever received - although it has no actual meaning or basis, it's the sentiment behind it that makes it so special.

Sorry to be so long winded.

That is an awesome thing. If I'm ever in Pax, I'll try to track you down, buy you a beer and talk wood turning!
