My step-grand dad suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke 2 weeks ago yesterday. My mom and dad were out of town so I got the call to go over there and be with my grandmother while they took him to the emergency room. He was admitted to the hospital with no hope of recovery and for the first time in his life, spent 2 night in the hospital. He was paralyzed on his entire right side, could not talk, and could not swallow. The decision was made to NOT insert a feeding tube so he was brought home to pass in peace.
The hospice folks said it would be 7-9 days but that stubborn old fellow fought it out for 14 days, slowly going downhill. Finally, yesterday evening at 11:40pm he passed away peacefully with my grandmother, my mother, my uncle, and a couple of other family members at his side.
John Dugger was born in 1912 and passed away at the age of 98! he and my grandmother got married when he was 91 so he has only been in our lives for 7 years but he was a full blown member of the family. He was one tough fellow but the nicest guys ever. Just the day before his stroke he was out in the garden pulling weeds! He had never been in the hospital and never even been to a doctor.
He was asked a few years ago what the single most memorable event was in his life and he said he remembered being in school and all the kids got up and ran to the window to see their first airplane fly over! When he was born, (1912) there were only 47 states, The Republic of China was formed, the Titanic made its maiden voyage and then sunk, Fenway Park opened, and Universal Pictures was incorporated. Of course there was not such thing as computers, TV, or space travel!
He lived a good, long life and will be missed.
