This is only the second bowl I've made. Finish turned today and its now a 7" bowl from an 8" blank. The wood is Rainbow Poplar. At this stage, it is sanded with 80 grit paper. Not too good yet at the inside of the bowl and had some nasty ridges to get rid of. One bowl at a time I guess!

Not bad for an early bowl turning effort. Keep at it, and you will get better, you just need to fine tune your tool use to get clean cuts on the inside.

Nice work Bob:

I've also just (1 yr ago) started turning bowls... Not very good yet. FOR ME (not you....) I have to be prepared for "dry blanks" to still dry further, warp slightly, and basically go "out-of-round". I don't sell, so no real problem... Just irritating that at my age I have to "learn" (no complaints actually... IT's A HOBBY!!! Chill).

Looks very nice! (My last two had lids... after 3 weeks both were still OK to donate, but had a distinct wobble in the base and the tops were not as flush as...10 minutes off the lathe). YES... I have much to learn "Master Obi Wan."

Thankd for sharing :)

Bob...Nice turning and great finish from what we can see... I'm also a newbie at bowl turning and appreciate your photos and how you turned your bowl plus the finish. I'm using 'green wood blanks' so your turning of thicker walls has convinced me to try that also especially for my first bowls and for bowls that are used for everyday use. Thanks for sharing and helping other newbies...we need all the assistance we can get since more professional turners often forget where they started from... (Not all professional turners, but some...) as they often forget we newbies were just like they were years and years ago... Newbies appreciate ALL the help we can get and see... Hopefully, we'll all be where they are now sometime in the future!!! Safe turning to EVERYONE!!!

Thank you Old Codger. I did a lot of google searching and you tube video watching on bowl turning. One of the things (that seemed to work on this bowl) was the rough turning of the bowl leaving the walls of the bowl 10% of the diameter of the blank. I rough turned this bowl around Christmas time. I then put it in a paper bag loaded with the shavings from rough turning it. It sat there drying until this past weekend when I turned it the rest of the way. It was out of round after drying, but leaving the walls thick like that allowed me to turn it round again. After lots of sanding (as my bowl turning skills are not the best right now) I finished it with salad bowl finish. I know its nothing fancy but I sure like it!

Thanks again!
