Had a second attempt at this CA finish thing.
The timber is jarrah and was a scrap, sanded to 600, then 4 coats of med. CA, sanded to 600 again and then buffed.

C&C welcome.

Bob.

Bob,

I looks a little too big of a piece to use the CA finish on, huh...??? what size it is...???

After a certain size, CA is damn hard to apply successfully, mainly because the CA dries before you get the full piece covered however, the main body part of it shows a beautiful and smooth gloss, I wonder what happened towards to top of the piece and, what is it...???

Cheers
George

OOPs,Sorry guys, forgot to put in dimensions.

It is nothing but a trial piece, 5in x 1in.

This was just a piece of scrap jarrah, the squarish end is where the drive dog was and obviously the other end was the tail stock live centre. There was no attempt to do anything with the ends.

Cheers,
Bob.

Well Bob, they say 'third time is a charm', but if I were you I wouldn't go there.
It looks like you have a system that works just fine.!

Certainly looks good to me. When demonstrating finishes, I use scraps (cut offs, failed attempts, etc.) and poplar dowels. No use wasting good hunks-o-wood on the practice pitch.

I hear you Bob, geezz mate, that thing looked at least, twice as big reason why I based my comment upon, sorry...!:biggrin:

No doubt, the shine you manage to get out of 4 coats of medium CA, has a lot to do with the buffing wheel system of your however, I believe it has also a lot to do with the wood you used, Jarrah is extremely dense/hard, not a lot of soaking in it, I would expect you to have to double the amount of CA layers, with most other softer woods, to get such a finish...!

All in all, your CA finish is coming up pretty good...!

Cheers
George

Bob you are doing what we do for our wood pens with the addition of what George said, 8 to 10 coats of the CA. Sanding much further is of little value because the "red stuff" continues from there and the white diamond completes the polishing.
