I just started turning pens this past Monday after returning from Afghanistan. These are the first pens I have ever turned and I am hooked allready.

Any comments on them will be greatly appreciated.

Let me first say thank you for your service. My wife is currently half way thru her deployment to Iraq and I am looking forward to showing her my work. (had to keep busy while she is gone)
Your pens look great!! Especially for your first. You are on the road to the addiction.

Thank-you Travis!!!! For your service in Afganistan.

You MUST have a background in turning.
Your pens are GREAT, but I can't imagine turning both acrylic and blackwood in the first setting.

I learned to turn in 8th grade, but untill turning these pens I hadn't touched a lathe in 12 years.

Thank you for your service! Just had 3 of my buddies get back from Iraq. Your pens look really good for the first ones. Great job. You did real good on the acrylic too.

Travis, Welcome home and thanks for your service. The pens looks great! Is there a metal band in the middle of the lower barrel or is it just reflection from a groove? Almost looks like copper.

Yes it is a metal band(26 guage copper). I should have included it in the description.

Great looking pens, Travis! Thank you for your service, too.

And as part of the "Welcome to IAP," here are a few links you might be interested in reading.
The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

I really like the Maple pen on the end. I just recently started turning a lot of my slims that way and really like the look.

WELCOME HOME BROTHER! :):usflag:

Your pens look great, and turning resin for one of your first is a hard thing to do, and you pulled it off great!
