With the help of JayDevin I was able to successfully turn my first two bowls today.

The first was a chunk of koa that came in a "turner's starter box" from Chris/Kalai way back when. It started out about twice as tall and tulip shaped but after a series of snags and cracks and other "ooopses" it came out like this:

It is 2-3/4" diameter and 1-5/16" tall.

The second one was a piece of "scrap wood" that Jay had laying around. He might post what kind it was cuz I don't remember. But it smelled good. This one I did 100% on my own:

It is 2-1/2" diameter at the "neck", 4-1/4" diameter wings, 1-5/16" tall.

Both bowls are about 1/8" thick and finished with several coats of semi-gloss rattle-can lacquer.

It was a fun day!

They both look quite nice. The design concept for the second one is quite nice, the broad rim, not fully round creates a novel look.

Yah, the organic nature of the curves on the first one just make it more "attractive" to people, me included. It is very comfortable to hold. The second one is "more interesting" but just doesn't have the same draw to it.
