So 3 months ago I decided to make a segment pen to test all my acquired skills in segmenting up to now. I set about coming up with a very complicated idea where the segments would form a basic "X" pattern. Only I didn't want them to form an "X". I wanted one side to appear as if the ovals were under- and over-lapping one another and on the other side, form somewhat of any eye shape.
The wood I wanted to use was one that has NEVER remained whole through to finish. Buckeye Maple Burl. Eyes fall out, entire barels split and fly off, and wood tends to crumble. THEN, I wanted a contrasting but related wood...Birdseye Maple. Very hard, very dense wood that by itself is fine to turn...just hard as heck. So we had a crazy segment design with a brittle unpredictable wood segmented right next to that. But wait....there's more! Then I decided I wanted to put aluminum slices in between every piece.
3 months later, here she is!:smile-big:
