I have a 2 hp shop fox DC in my shop and this evening it died. Made a horrible noise and stopped real fast. The motor froze up so I imagine it is the bearings. I know I could probably get a new 2 hp motor but the DC is only $300 new and not worth putting much money into since it has been used pretty hard for 5 or 6 years.

Anyway, I have not shopped for DC's in quite a while and am hoping to glean some info from someone with more knowledge on the subject than I. I need to get something pretty quick since I realy do not like running my shop without. I need something at least 2 hp since I have all my machines ducted. I don't want to spend a fortune but am open to upgrading. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Get a cyclone, I am in the middle of setting up a Clear View 5 HP cyclone. I don't have all the duck work done yet, but I fired off the cyclone the other day and I think I created a Black Hole in my shop [:D]

M-MAN,
Did you ever do static tests on that 2 hp DC? I ask because I ahve a 2 hp Delta two bag that is rated 2100 CFM. Now I imagine that is free flow. I've been told that I can only expect 400 cfm with a .5 micron bag and approx 20' run of 4" flex pipe. I was just wondering if that sounds right. I am thinking that it should be more. I have a lot more reading to do before setting it up to run. I am waiting to acid etch and seal the new floor of the shop.

If I did it over again, it would probably be a cyclone. I like the idea of separating the dust from chip. Now I run a 3 hp 2 bagger. 3200 cfm. Got it from a retiring WW for $120. So it could be a while before I replace it. It was unused when I got it a year ago. Right place at the right time.

Steve,
There is supposed to be a way to insert a cyclone effect in the two baggers, a garbage can with an in/out fitting in the lid.. haven't tried one myself, but think seriously about...because of the noise, I added a little closet/outhouse onto the end of my shop for the DC.. ran the pipe through the wall.. now only have a muffled roar inside the shop... problem is I don't think I made the little closet for my DC big enough to set the can...

I have mine in an out building also. Same muffled roar. Mine is definitely not big enough for any additions to the machine. It sucks fine for my needs. Each machine is blast gated and I generally only run one at a time. My next buy will be a "Long Ranger". I am so tired of going across the shop to turn it on.

You can buy remote control for dc's at a reasonable price.

I just put a switch on the wall above my workbench... then it's just turn around to the lathe... right now I only have the lathe and band saw on the DC... need another wye connector and hose to attach the table saw.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and advice. I decided that my shop is for my enjoyment and is my "Bass Boat" so to speak so I just ordered a ClearVue cyclone. Life is too short to spend it cleaning out dust collector bags and breathing ultra fine wood dust. Afterall, my dad got nasopharangeal cancer which is very rare in Americans. They primarly link is exposure to wood dust, primarily plywood dust. He was a carpenter and never used any kind of protection. Now I will have the very best protection possible to help minimize these issues.

BTW, my dad underwent chemo and ratiation and was declared cancer free last year, thank goodness.

Very good about your Dad Curtis. It's nice to hear about one that is going right for a change.
Chuck, I have a switch on the wall also, except it's on the other side of the shop. That 18 or 20 feet seems like a mile when you do it so often. Some times I just leave the DC running. Really don't like to do that though.

I use a HF too, but had to hardwire the switch. It's been good to me otherwise. I guess it's about 3 years old now. I only paid a hundred fifty for it, so it was a good buy for me. It's a 2 hp also. I think it's 1100 cfm rated too. I'm getting a 1 hp for my indoors shop, I hope.

Curtis, good news for you and your dad. I think you made an excellent choice and I can't wait for pics of the install and a full review.

Congrats and enjoy your clean air.

I've been looking for a DC and been reading a lot of good reviews on the JDS DC. I bought one of their dust filter and it works great. Remote got destroyed in shipping, they had one to me in less than a week. After calling me the next morning after I sent an email. Can't get better customer service than that.

Steve,
I just leave mine running while I'm in the shop... I have advantage of living in country.. closest neighbor is about 1000 yards away.. next is 1/2 mile so they don't really hear the noise... actually, 1/2 mile neighbor is louder.. he has auto mech shop on top of the hill behind his house and plays hillbilly music at maximum volumn all day.. then yells over the noise..
but my switch is only 4 or 5 feet from lathe, and right over the work bench.

Curtis,
Glad to hear good news about your Dad.. My dad was carpenter, but don't think he ever had any problems with wood dust.. he smoked for 60 years and they finally made him quit just after his 74th birday... 4 months later he had a massive heart attach. Lost him in '89... first time I ever felt mortal.
