I made a ratan longbow for Gunther a while back and much to my disapointment it sat on the rack for weeks. I was out warming up for bear yesterday when he and Momma came up the hill with bows in hand.(I have a 20 target course in the back yard) Rather than loose an arrow we decided to teach gunther on the target closest to the house. Within an hour all I had to do was help him with form. I kept a hand on the bow incase the arrow sliped off the rest but he drew, aimed and released on his own. He did well enough that if he keeps practicing he might be helping me put meat on the table this fall! I couldnt be prouder! He kept saying "look daddy that bear dead! I shoot him foot!"

Mama's brag post.

I used to teach archery for the local JOAD program (Junior Olympic Archery Development). I love teaching kids to shoot.

My son started shooting when he was nine, won his age division in the indoor nationals at 13, and was 4th ranked collegiate archer in the US. He was on ASU's national championship archery team two years running. He was approached by the Olympic team, but he was studying for his PhD in Microbiology and didn't want to lose a year of college while campaigning with the olympic team.

Am I a proud Mama? You bet

I've been teaching archery to kids in JOAD and 4-H Shooting Sports for years. I've taught a lot of kids how to shoot and I love it when they manage to start hitting a few targets. Its a great sport for a lot of kids, my sons started young and still enjoy shooting. I've also been making bows and knapping points for years.

His stance looks pretty good, you are teaching him good form. May you both enjoy every shot and not run out of arrows too soon.

Thanks My hope is his form will be better than mine. I always hear a few snickers on the first target at 3D shoots.......not so much after that.

That's great! I am an diehard archery hunter and have been dreaming of making laminated recurves for several years now. There's just not enough time in the day, yet. I remember helping my oldest 2 shooting. They could never get enough. Way to buid Great memories with him.
