Got a issue: while working with a click pen kit, and my blanks trimmed flush with the tubes, and all pressed nicely together, the ink cartridge tip doesn't extend as far out as it should. Any thoughts as to why?

Check the orientation of the spring. Try flipping it.

Some springs are tapered; try reversing it as mentioned.
