We just got back from a nice long five days at the cabin. We may just go back up again tomorrow! But we have no WiFi there.

I have been thinking of switching from T-Mobile to Verizion, and get one if those mobile hotspot devices they offer. It's supposed to run up to five Internet devices. I'm thinking of maybe even replacing my DSL with this, which would help me justify affording it.

Does anybody have one of these? How do you like it?

Does anybody have other ways to take your WiFi with you? I am open to suggestions!

While you're at it, what do you think about Verizon for cell service, and the iPhones?

Thanks!

Scott.

Scott I can`t help with most of your questions but Verizon in my area is the only way to go for cell phones. Good luck with what ever you choose.

But Scott is in Idaho- nothing works up there. You need to come south to our Utah mountains Scott. I like Verizon here in Utah for what it is worth. Our Daughter had four phones still in service so we had to change over to Sprint to satisfy her contracts. I am jealous of being able to get away from everyone and going to the mountains. Enjoy that retirement.

The Mifi stuff is pretty cool... but a couple of big BUTS:

1) Check the data coverage (choose the right bullet and refresh the map): http://www.verizonwireless.com/wireless-coverage-area-map.shtml

2) Data limits will KILL you. Replacing DSL with this is dangerous unless you are a very low overall user. Look very carefully at the rate plans.

You can share your data with some of the phones, but that also is typically an extra charge. Look at your costs overall.. It gets pricy quick.

Dean is right Scott! Make sure you check the download limits. My mother has one from Verizon and she is limited to 3GB/month. However, she doesn't use it very much and has never exceeded 1GB.

The cost is fairly high also. Keep in mind it is operating on a 3G signal which is likely slow compared to your DSL.

However, the convenience is nice. When my Mother goes from Illinois to Florida for the winter, she just unplugs it and it goes with her. As long as there is a Verizon cellular signal, she has internet. Very convenient!

Just do your homework.....

I love my verizon mifi but my company pays for it, not me. Decent speed but not blazingly fast. I use it when I travel for business to power my Ipad. Don't have to lug around a laptop anymore.

I use the Verizon hotspot with an iPad and iPod. But ONLY when nothing else is available. It works but it seems really slow to me. I can't imagine 4 or 5 devices on it at once. Good luck.

Sprint 3G/4G wireless hotspot, $25 per month, no data size restrictions. Continous coverage between Dallas and Lubbock, kept the kids and the war department (my wife) connected in route to Texas Tech and back on several trips, now. Also, great as a backup for the couple of times we've had a) service outage for our cable broadband at home, as well as b) electrical outage that also took down the cable connection. Ran a couple of iPads and a laptop and netbook on it simultaneously, not blazing fast with 4 connections but decent speed/response.

Not sure where in Idaho you are located, but if you are anywhere around Boise check out Clear networks....... www.clear.com ........

Its 4G and it is fast. I am in the Atlanta area and gave replaced my cable broadband with it. It is just as fast a my cable connection was if not faster....and I had a fast connection.

Thanks!

So, the fact we like to stream from Netflix would stress one of these devices? Hmmmm. And we probably won't get 4G in this area for some time. Other ideas?

Scott.

We have the Verizon MiFi for when we travel, no complaints, not the fastest that we have used but not the slowest either. Not sure what the monthly fees run, but I think about $100, and I don't know if we have a limit or not. I don't think we do, because my wife also uses it at home, and it gets used a lot. But if you don't have coverage in your area it is worthless, I can use it at home, at our place in New Mexico, but at our ranch it is worthless.

They are really pushing that Clear.com idea around the Salt Lake City, Utah area really heavy. I have not had the chance to learn much about it myself. I am interested in being able to get away from the house and have wireless for my ipad or laptop. I am a slow learner when it comes to new features.

data download limits will kill you for avg use never mind streaming netflix

i use an app called tether with a blackberry which works great. it goes against your talk time not data usage. they also support droids.
