Just a warning, I had a sanitary sewer line replaced yesterday. The guy used one of the photo deposit app to put it his bank account. He also had another larger check to deposit. My check was on top of the other check and it covered that checks routing and account numbers. The amount was in the clear on the right side of the check.

This morning I checked to see if they were debited form the account. Both checks were taken from my account, mine and the check it was on top of. I called him and then took up the copies of my account from on line. They are working on it currently, as is his credit union.

The tip off for me was the double checks with the same number and an amount I didn't write.

So watch out as with more small businesses using those apps the mistakes will increase. The people at the bank were shocked that it went thru. I told them that is one reason I won't use phones apps for banking!

Will let you know how long it takes to get my money back.

Not sure I buy the logic here. It was a human error not a fault with the app. What apparantly happened is that the deposit app looked at the two checks atop each other and only saw one. The vendor essentially photo-shopped the two checks by stacking them in the manner he did. (BTW, this is an old copy machine trick.)

Don't give up on technology just because someone else does not understand it. I see this more of a learning and teaching moment. You learned to be more vigilant and you've taught the rest of us to make sure we are as well.

I've used mobile photo deposits for three years and have not had a single issue. In fact, I almost exclusively use mobile banking with my institution (USAA) and am more than satisfied.

YMMV

I will not be getting or using the mobile bank apps as their is just to much chance of somebody helping them selves to the bank info. Nobody in the two different banks I deal with, mine or my mothers will use them since they can be compromised. That tells me a lot! I wanted to point out that somebody else using the app can cause you a boat load of crap trying to get your money back! so far his Credit union said it's not their problem. My bank is looking in to it!

Even before this I didn't use the phone for banking transactions. Since I don't travel and still remember were my bank is located. I like brick and mortar locations.
Like they use to say in the navy back in Nam. Smoke em if ya got em!
You'd could say use em if you like em now for the phone apps.
And since you can't control what somebody else will do with them. Keep an eye on your accounts.

After, visiting both institutions yesterday morning. They were at the fingers pointing stage who was at fault. I told them I really didn't care who was at fault, I just wanted my money back! Of course since this happened late Thursday afternoon and I didn't find it till Friday am. The accounting depts aren't open on the weekend. We will see how fast it is resolved this coming week.

Well just got the call from my bank, that the problem has been corrected! It went faster than I had expected. Now it is the other guys credit union to get the money from the proper account.

Two thoughts:

First, I love my banks mobile app. It allows me to do many things that used to require a visit to the bank. Given that I don't have time in my life to be going to the bank all the time, this is a big win.

Second, I'm not sure why you bothered handling it the way that you did. I would have phoned my bank to let them know that there was a check showing on my account that I didn't write. I would not have visited the other bank nor wasted much of my day's time on the issue. My bank would investigate the issue like any other potential case of fraud and resolve it. Happily, this resolution would be super quick for two reasons: 1) The duplicate check number should already have raised a flag and likely would have delayed/stopped the item from moving past 'pending' status. 2) As soon as a real live person actually views the check images, they will see what happens and fix the problem.

It had gone past the pending status and debited my account. The bank wasn't aware of the problem till I pointed it out. and the bank call center is off shore in the Philippines, and they are a pain to deal with!
