I have several midi and mini lathes. Now I need a Lethe for traveling in the RV that is small light but still has morse taper head and tail as I most do center turning of pens and such. I have read up on the proxon but the aluminum tail worried me. The General International at 15# looks interesting but not sure of the quality/value and seems motor overheating is a concern. Are there any other choices? Do not want to haul around. 50# unit. Please let me know your thoughts

This is how I made it work for me. The lathe is a Jet 1410 (OOOPs!) 1014 (you can see the top of the headstock column sticking up in the photo with the open doors.

I was going to recommend the Jet 1014, but Glen beat me to it. I have had mine for about four months and could not ask for better. It's very quiet, no vibration to speak of, unless you put something on it to make it do so, and it is lightweight. I don't even bolt mine down to the table it's mounted on.

Like a smaller lathe

I have 2 of the Jet 1014 plus larger Jet and Rikon variable speed. I ws looking for something smaller for use while RVing. I plan to bore a turn the blanks round before heading out

Anything smaller of quality?

I have a Jet "Pen Lathe". I don't know if Jet makes them anymore. It is a mt1 and came with all necessary stuff to turn pens. It is belt driven, variable speed. I turned pens for about two years with it and never had a problem. You might check the Jet site to see if they still have them.
It is about 20" long and can be held in one hand.

Consider the Sherline 4000 series if your blanks are pre drilled. The probability of your accessories fitting the sherline is nil but some might. The Taig brand lathes may also fit the bill. I turned pens on both and they both have a small wood tool adapter. The Sherline uses a 1mt in the headstock and a 0mt stub in the tail stock. I have moved on from the Sherline because of Tail stock issues with drilling but they do a great job on precision turning and you can do small metal work as well.
