I was at a show this weekend whe another pen maker was selling 50 cal items. A young man came by my booth and said he had bought one for $25. He said someone in the booth told him the casing was from a son who fired it in Afghanistan.

Does the military let soldiers return with the fired brass casings?

Of course, they could have gotten it from a surplus dealer and assumed it was fired by someone who eventually deployed.

i went to Panama when i was in the Army and we were able to find ways to get things through customs on the way back in to the states. So i would say that it is a possibility, but hard to really know the truth.

Spent ordnance is supposed to be turned in to base weapons for disposal; however, there is no check and balance for expended small arms casings. It's pretty easy to keep some casings from a gun shoot. Customs for military is sometimes more laxed, so not very difficult to get empty casings from Afgan to the states.
