Since I started turning, I've been using a hack saw and miter box to cut my blanks. I've really been wanting to upgrade, obviously. Originally I was thinking i'd be looking at the cheapest options out there, but I ended up with a bit of spending money in graduation gifts, so I think I want to get something a little better than the bottom of the line. I've poked around on Lowes and Home Depot's websites...can you guys recommend one? Im looking at $200 or less...

If it was me I'll look at craiglist first before buying at any stores.you could find some really good deals on tools that are new and used very little.Be patient and the right deal will come your way.

Dad found the one I have for 75 bucks. Used, and large. It does great work for what it is, and gives me no major complaints. Craigslist is great if you know what you're after.

Craigslist......definitely craigslist!
I found an older Delta 14" with the 6" riser attachment for 225.00. Several people mentioned I could get a new grizzly 14 for 500.00 delivered, but this Delta is old enough that it's ACTUALLY made in the USA! Lol. That craigslist deal is second only to the deal I got on my Delta LA200 lathe. Got the lathe, the bed extension, nova chuck, a bunch of tooling, 90% of it Sorby tools, an he accepted my offer of 200.00 for the works!! I still giggle when I think about it!

Point is, check craigslist regularly and you will find the deal you want, just be patient.

I dont like anything RYOBI powered period. Had one of their saw-zalls, motor went out I sent it back prepared to pay for the rebuild after all its my trade tools used hard. For the price of the rebuild of the motor only I purchased 2 Black and decker professional saws new!!

There is a common misconception among the young, that you have to have something new. Don't fall for that. Sure something shiny and fresh from the box complete with the new tool whiff might be nice but if you only have about 200 to spend you will get a much better quality saw buying used.

If you're interested in new, then the Rikon 10" is a nice little saw for cutting blanks. Its normally available at Woodcraft for about $240 or so. My niece has one for cutting pen blanks and small bowl blanks and it works perfectly for her needs. It is a much more robust saw than the 9" ones available at hardware stores, and would have some resale should you decide to move up. I have a Rikon 14" which is really overkill for pen turning, even if you have to cut up some spindle stock. The 10" is light weight, so its moveable should you need to re-arrange the shop.

I got a catalog from Home Depot yesturday and it has The Rigid 14" bandsaw for about $250 and that's with a life time warranty.
