Whenever my kids are online and I use the microwave they lose connection. I have a wireless router. It is hooked straight into the computer, but they have an antenna on the XBOX.

Wait until they are totally into their game and start the microwave. Then explain to them that the microwave does not affect a pickup baseball or basket ball game.

Yeah I am a grumpy curmudgeon, I am tired of video games, just ask my kids.

My wife got rid of our microwave 8ish years ago because she read things like this.

In theory that should not be happening. The microwave is sealed and the microwaves should not leave the oven. If it is leaking microwaves, you have a serious problem and the unit should not be used.

From Dummies.com

You can easily tell whether your microwave oven causes network problems — the problems only happen when it's cooking. If the microwave is used infrequently, you might just live with the interference, but if it's used a lot, say in a small office at lunchtime, consider buying a newer model. Also, make sure that the microwave is on a different electrical circuit from your laptops and access points.

Simple answer is to run the XBOX by cable rather than wirelessly. BUT, with kids knowing that a cable connections is faster, if it were possible to "wire" the XBOX it would have been done long ago.

The second solution is to make SURE that the XBOX and Mircoware are not on the same circuit (flip the breaker for the microwave and see if the Xbox goes dead). If they are on the same curcuit the signal from the xbox could be running to the ac lines as could the Microwave. The solution here is to get the xbox as far away from the microwave circuit as possible.

Some microwaves and older cordless phones really do play havoc with wireless G.

Third solution hire me to fix it:)

Simple fix, turn off the XBox and have the kids actually play outside.

I grew up playing out side all of my childhood; no technical toys at all , and I turned out fine.

Might just be better for them also.....

If your router is old then it is probably operating in the 2.4 Ghz range which is more likely to receive interference from things like older model microwave ovens. (Even small amounts of interference are enough). If you upgrade to a 5.8 ghz you might have less problems and eliminate the issue. I say "might" because there are many variables here. If you buy one from Best Buy usually they are returnable if it does not solve the issue.

Most home microwave ovens run at a frequency of 2.45GHz.

WiFi is runs between 2.4 and 2.5 GHz, the overlap conflict is real. Try and set your WiFi to one of the other frequencies to avoid the conflict. Channels 1 thru 5 are below the 2.45 oven freq, but the lower you can go, the better, I think.

why is everyone here against video games?
don't you know that the average gamer is 29 years old anyways?

I love my games, and my advise to you is get rid of the microwave! cook on the stove instead...

Because if my children had their way, they would waste their entire childhood in front of their video games and miss out on a portion of life you can never get back.

They can carve out time to play when they're older, if it still interests them, but they will never have the freedom and youth again to get out and enjoy life experiences before the real world comes knocking on their door.

As for the initial post, if your microwave is interfering with your wireless, I would think that the shielding on the microwave is not doing it's job. The healthy option may be to upgrade the microwave, but the cheaper solution might be to upgrade your wireless router technology.
