You don't need the full kit unless you really want it.

I sand to 400 using Norton 3X sandpaper. Apply my CA finish and sand to 400 again. Next I go to 0000 steel wool. Then I wet sand with 4000 and 6000 MM followed by buffing red rouge, white diamond, and metal polish.

If you use MM as wet sanding only, it will last "forever". If you use it for dry sanding it will last until the first time you get it too warm. Then it will melt.

I prefer the sheets to the pads, also. They let you use your fingertips to pad the work, and you can feel for rough spots while you're at it. Your fingertips will also let you know when things are too hot, so you can lift before the MM melts. I have maybe 1000 pens on my first set of MM, and not done yet.
 
sheets. the pads sit in a drawer! also...Tim & Tracy (www.woodnwhimsies.com) sell sets for a lot less...I think they are 11.69 for the full set. They also sell individual sheets if you don't want all of them. Good people, prices and service.
 
i would second the woodnwhimsies sheet set. i've gotten a few from them and they've lasted me a good while. i don't see them wearing out anytime soon. one set i cut in half, it seems easier to work with on pens that way.
 
I've used the ones from Woodcraft for 2 years, wet on acrylic and Tru-stone and dry on wood...they are still working just fine. I did melt a small portion of one but after that, I don't let them get hot. I expect they'll last me another couple years and will reassess then. I sand through 600 grit wet/dry sand paper then switch over.

They do last a long time and, if they get a little build-up, I put them inside a sock and into the washing machine and they are ready to go.
