Have seen where some alloys of brass and aluminum can be turned with HSS tools. Question is: who has done this? Tools. Alloy used? Go the idea from a YT video of turning aluminum. Tool appeared to be a bowl gouge but not certain.

I've made a few pens from 6061 aluminum. Stay away from the box store aluminum. I get short drops from a local machine shop.

I would not downplay Home Depot at all. I have used many times aluminum from them as well as brass if you get true brass. i use to buy from Home depot their brass door kicks that are true brass and have actually scrollsawn them for projects. Here is one such project that the brass I bought was from Homer. What was great it was beautifully polished so it saved me that trouble. All the overlays are that brass. Cut on my RBI scrollsaw with Jewler's blades.
