I'm not sure what makes a blank an Abalone blank at all really, but here's my version…Mermaid Abalone. I wasn't really going for that look, it just sort of happened.
I think usually, folks here discussing Abalone are referring to the snail's shell. It's multi-colored and iridescent. There's a woodworker on Craftisian.com who uses abalone in his box lids for marquetry. Pretty amazing work.
This is Abalone Shell. Overall this one went pretty smooth. I’ve got one more to finish up then I’ll take what I’ve learned from these and try to come up with another one. Questions and Comments Welcome.
Abalone blanks consist of colors that are pearlescent. Particularly, the whites and lighter colors. When the colors are mixed and poured, the effect of the pearls to mimic and create the look of an abalone shell.
