I, in no way mean this to be political and if it goes that direction please shut it down.

We all know where the economy went in 2008. We all know where the housing market went, and we all know the names of the banks that were right there in the middle of it. We all know someone who has lost their job and in my case had to let good people go because of the economy.

We own a boat storage business and up until a year ago a boat repair business. This is a leisure market business because very few people NEED to fix or store, or even own a boat so we got our asses kicked but we have survived so far.

Several of our customers Who were general contractors and WAY behind on their bills have finally started making payments. One even contacted me without me threatening to sell their boats, made arrangements to get caught up, and made a payment that was approved by the bank. Another called to say that he has had no work in the last three quarters but just got two very large jobs, and is in the final running for three more. Then he made a payment and arrangements to catch up. Another customer who has had a rough winter paid rent early.

I am not saying things are great, in fact I would say I am worse off with food price increases and two growing food vacuums....I mean boys at home. But, maybe there is hope if people are starting to build again.

Trying to think positive.

two more new homes were slapped together behind me in the last 6 months. I'm amazed that they can sell them in the location they are (some are about 50 foot from the major DC-Chicago rail line), but what do I know.

Maybe they like trains. A customer of mine bought a house with an unobstructed view of a run way so he can sit on the porch and watch the planes come in, all day and all night. He and his wife own several rental properties and all of them are rented with long time renters and all face runways.

Me, I like quiet.

As far as building goes, homes just keep on being built here in Lubbock, Texas. Our area has faired far better than most in this sluggish economy. My engravin business was up 50% for the monthy of April compared to April 2011. My prayers are that our economy is starting to head in the right direction.

Lets keep are fingers crossed......It's good to hear that you are getting reimbursted.......It was generous of you to allow this to go on so long

I am hoping for Karma points. We are in a very good position. My father in law got everything paid off so no major debts outside the student loans.

I am a civil engineer working mostly munipal type jobs, but we do have developer clients.

we are seeing more development work in the last few months, with several more jobs coming in the near future.

Eventually the economy comes back....sometimes it takes longer than others. The great depression started in 1930 and really didn't end until 1940 after Adolph decided to invade Poland and WW II started. This downturn has hung on longer than most - I think because of the burst in the housing market - but eventually it will end.

As far as our economy is concerned I think this recession is the least of our worries over the long run. I can't see how we can ever recover from the debt load.

We cant recover from the debt load. Nor can we recover from the US dollar losing its place as the "World Reserve Currency". Places like China, Russia, and many others have already started using currency other than the US dollar to buy and sell oil. Others are following suit. Other countries have also been trading in there US dollars and exchanging them for other currencies. This means that they will no longer use the US dollar for any of there buying and selling. In parts of the world the US dollar is no longer accepted. Cuba no longer accepts US money. In Amsterdam, they no longer accept US dollars as payment, you have to exchange it for foreign currency, and about the only place that you can exchange your US dollars for foreign currency is at the foreign post office. Nowhere else in Amsterdam accepts US currency. As soon as the rest of the world follows suit, and the US dollar is no longer the World wide "World Reserve Currency", the dollar will be devalued and the economy will collapse. No society in history that used fiat money to fuel there society, has ever lasted, they always collapse. We are on that road unfortunately. Dont mean to be a Debbie Downer, but nothing has changed other than a few people being up on there luck. There is no escaping this one. Once we lose our "World Reserve Currency" status in the world, the Federal Reserve will no longer be able to print money at will to save our economy any longer, the printing will stop, and the debt will take over.

Yep -- I see no way in the world to avoid it regardless of who we elect to congress or the presidency -- it is engrained in the system. The biggest problem is the average American citizen has no clue that it's happening or that what the consequences will be. Fortunately I'm old and won't have to live through the chaos but there are a lot of Americans who are well to do now who will learn what it is to be a have not.

Yep, you're right. We should all quit now and let it happen. Screw it just roll over and die. Or we can realize nothing will be the same as it was and get the hell on on with our lives.

No one suggested that anyone drink hemlock, jump off a high building, give their kids butcher knives and send them out on a busy street to play or step in front of a fast moving freight train:tongue:

Even if I learn today that I'm going to die tomorrow - I will act today like life is never going to end. I think we all will, it isn't in the nature of human beings to change their lives because there might be a disaster sometime in the future.

Our area is not doing good. There might be some new construction but home sales are still way done and slowly dropping. Much like FL and CA, Home values were over inflated to start with.

There is a definite increase in both residential and commercial construction where I am at in the Brazos valley.
But unlike many, I am grateful for the hard times the construction industry has gone thorough in the last few years, it has weeded out many weeds and taught me a few things that I would have never learned otherwise.
