A young lady in neighboorhood recently graduated and headed to a college with the noted colors. What wood would [if a wood chuck could...naw] be my best chance to make a pen of her school colors. Perhaps a dark rosewood for the maroon, but can't think of anything silver...other than silver birch which is not really silver. Any ideas...other than aluminum...don't turn metal here...but???? Maybe just all wood in the rosewood, and the hardware in chrome or rhodium. Thanks, you guys are great!!! Really need ideas .

I think you are on the right track with rosewood and chrome/rhodium hardware. Manzanita may work, also.

Good luck!

I use Jarrah Burl or Madagascar Rosewood (bois de rose) with either satin pearl (for maroon & white) or chrome (for maroon & silver) hardware. Both woods are hard to find (especially bois de rose, which is only available from grandfathered residual stocks) but they make very beautiful & unique pens.

Thanks for the ideas. Will check stash but doubt I have any of those. But heading out to do some other stuff today so can check at Woodcraft. Not time to mail order etc, since used up all my dithering time dawdling and dallying around .

For maroon you might try camitillo rosewood or purple heart. Silver implies spalt so buckeye burl wood offerthe widest range of gray to black.
