Let's be fair to them. It doesn't actually start until tomorrow afternoon. Just people arriving today and tomorrow and informally socializing.

We went last year and wish we were going to this one. Lucky pups get a ride in Bruce's Lincoln from the airport. :)

Just finished up my contest pen a little while ago.....It Did happen.... But I am not posting a pic yet!

Okay,.....here is a pic.....of what happens when you work on a contest pen the night before the event!

What, isn't that normal? Looks neat to me.

After messing up by original pen, I was able to get a second one done. Might not be a winner, but I bet it generates some conversation. I am looking forward to meeting folks from this forum.

Love your tool rest!

Thanks! A woodturning club member made that one. It has a hardened top bar and is made short for penturning. It is about 4". I like that it can get in close and leave room for your fingers below the tool.

Cody, this is just one pic! There are other messy spots as well!
I am anxious to see your pen! And to hear about what happened with the first attempt.
See you this evening

Great time at MAPG tonight!
Got to chat with old friends, put faces with names & visit the vendor tables.

Kurt Herzog spoke and showed slide of pens and talked about design, materials and techniques. He is a wealth of knowledge!

I got to see the IAP Collection first hand and there are many outstanding pens, showing excellent workmanship and creativity.
Tonight, a pen made with blanks handmade by Eagle mounted on a custom made, one of a kind Sterling Silver pen was donated to the Collection!

There were door prizes, brownies, and even cookies made by Dee!

A good night for sure!

Temptation, temptation

Snakeskins, feather blanks, gator jawbones, stamps, watch parts, jigs, molds, tools, etc. I will be heading back to the MAPG shortly and have to be strong. My wife issued a new edict effective May 1, I am supposed to start keeping track of my spending on pen stuff. Told her I would only be going for the demos. Already spent some money last night, what should I do:
-man up and say I earned it I can spent it;
-buy her roses and tell her how great she is;
-go back and buy a flowery polymer clay blank and make or a pen; or,
- claim insanity?

So sad I can't be there. Left Charlotte at noon yesterday headed to Richmond. Two hours into the (5+ hour) ride, my back was hurting so bad, I had to turn around. First one I've missed. :frown::frown:

C'mon guys....stop teasing us...

Let's see some pics !! I'm sure I'm not the only one that really wants to see the Sterling Silver pen with the Eagle blanks...!! Wow that must be cool !!!
NEED MORE INFO !!!!!!!! Who made the pen, for starters:biggrin:

IAP Collection - Pen #34

I'll do a more formal thread/announcement when I get home, but here is a recent addition... Received yesterday while at the MAPG, as one of the Initial IAP Collection Core Contacts (I'm hoping for a few more....). This is NOT a contest winner (that would just not be fair) but was from the original group. Some things are well worth the wait.

Simply: Blank - crafted by "Eagle"; Components - "MRedburn" and Turning by - "OKLAHOMAN."

"Eagle's Feathers"

This is an outright donation by OKLAHOMAN as a tribute to Eagle.
A collaboration of 3 incredible artists

The highlight of our trip here was Lou Metcalf (DCBluesman) after being gone for 4 years met Dee and I at our hotel and I convinced him to come on down to the Woodcraft when we were setting up and say hello. Then Dee and I went out to Dinner with him. He dropped off a boatload of his pen turning materials including hundreds of great exotic blanks, puzzle blanks, components a few thousand nibs and much more, so be on the look out for the largest garage sale of pen making materials you've ever seen.
Skip rat, Lou said hello.

Roy, I'm really pleased you met up with Lou. I miss him around here.
Was it the same Woodcraft that Lou took Eagle and me to?
I wish I could have been there at the get together.

One day...

Cody ask for 24 hour free card , then the roses, always tell she looks lovely, if she still does not go for it,ask her to buy it for you. Cause she does not have to keep track of your spending lol

If I remember correctly you all went to the Springfield, Virginia Woodcraft. MAPG was held at the Richmond, Virginia Woodcraft in Glen Allen.

All of the above.. Really enjoyed this year (as I did the last two).. I liked the casting demo.. Never tried pours in 3 layers..

3 nights in hotels (some of them questionable) - $250
Gas and food for 4 days - $300
34 hours in the car with two teenagers to go to the MAPG and meet all the people and see the fantastic presentations - Priceless!!!

Elizabeth, Duncan and I had a great time getting to meet everyone and be entertained and educated during the 2 days of the gathering. Each presenter taught each of us something that we will use going forward, and it was worth the trip. Thank you to the organizers and for the Glen Allen Woodcraft for hosting us during the weekend. We walked away with our door prizes and a good chunk of loot from PTownSubbie (and if I brought more money, 2 of the 6 tube molds was going home with me...)

Guess I better start saving up for another trip back for the 2016 gathering...

John,
It was nice to meet you and your teens. I am glad you braved the trip and got to spend this time with them. It will be a trip they will remember for years!
Your daughter, Elizabeth showed us a pen she turned! She is well on her way to more pens for sure!
