In reading up on pen turning and equipment I will need I noticed that there are several types of mandrels. I am considering the adjustable style but am confused as to the difference between "A" and "B" styles of mandrels!? Can someone shed some light on this please?

Also, regarding turning chisels should I look at a pen turning set of, usually 3 in a set, chisels or go with a regular set which can be used for larger spindle turning later?

Paul,
I'm sure others here can explain the difference better than I, but it is my impression that the "A" mandrel is a 7mm and the "B" is an 8 mm.. don't quote me on this though.

As for tools, my opionion for what it worth, go for the regular set.. you can do pens with a full sized set as easily as with the "pen set". I use full sized 22" handled tools. I also have a full set of the shorter handles, 12" I think that I use occasionally..

According to Berea..."The A mandrel (sometimes called a "7mm" mandrel) which is 0.247 +0 -0.002 inches in diameter and and other mandrel which has a larger diameter, the B mandrel. This is 0.291 +0 -0.002 inches in diameter."

The B mandrel is only used with some of the Berea kits. Everyone else uses the A.

For the chisels, go with a full size set.

I've been at this for a couple of years and haven't used the "B" mandrel yet. And now with all of the buzz about between center turning, it is likely I never will. The main benefit with the "B" mandrel is the increased stability and rigidity.

I have a "b" mandrel.Bought it after i bought a round top european fountain pen and bushings from Arizona sillouhette . Bought the kit and bushings, when they arrived i found the bushings to be loose on my mandrel. Called A. S. and they told me about the difference in the mandrells(bushings?). Ordered a mandrell for the B bushings and everything worked out. Unles you are going to do a lot of these "b" bushing kits(Dont think there are that many) i wouldnt bother.Woodcraft sells berea kits and sells "a" bushings for the kits they sell.
