New of course. Do I need a different mandrel for each kind of pen kit?

No. Same mandrel but different bushings.

For most kits you will need a 7mm or "A" mandrel. It is the bushings that are kit specific.

Let me just respectfully say (assuming you haven't been making pens yet) make a few pens first and then make an assessment. I'm sure you will find a way to add weight if you really want to.

Also, materials like m3 and trustone are heavy.

If you want heavy pens, go to Truestone blanks or very dence woods. Alo pen kits that measure out at 9/16 ths, 11/16ths, 3/4s, or 13/16ths. Some will require 1 inch blanks. Jim S
