mandreless bushings??/

Hi JT; I use the bushings to get close but not too close. Then I remove them and use calipers the rest of the way.

Some bushings I have, are somewhat off-centre, so to ensure roundness (if that's a word) I prefer to finish up bushingless.

Who sells mandrel less bushings???? Or do you not use bushings and just use a caliper???

Paul in OKC sells them. His are better than the stock ones you buy at online stores. JohnnyCNC used to sell them - before his flood. Not sure if he has started back or not.

I have several of JohnnyCNC's bushings. However I don't have bushings for all of my pens. For those others, I just use the normal bushings that I purchased at CSUSA, AS, BearToothWoods etc.

I do not recommend turning a blank down without bushings - too much slippage which can flair the ends. AFTER the blank is turned down to near size, take the bushings off and sand down the final .02 or .03 inch with sandpaper and use calipers. You can sand down to size with bushings but you might get sanding dust. By removing the bushings before getting the blank to size, you will eliminate the wear on the bushings - that make most people consider bushings as consumables.

MISUNDERSTANDING: ALL BUSHINGS can be used on the mandrel-less for turning down to size or near size (except the slimlines). The difference in Mandrel-less bushings by Johnny CNC and Paul in OKC is that they custom make them and their tolerances are guaranteed. I occasionally get a bushing from the companies mentioned above that is drilled off center by 3 or 4/1000 inch and it makes a difference.

Paul's and Johnny's bushings cost more but they are WELLL worth it. I think a couple of other people were considering making them too. Beware they are higher priced but they are higher quality too, and worth it - did I mention that they are worth it!
