Holy ouch batman!!

Looking at the chunks out of your lathe bed, I'm amazed the arm isn't worse off!

How on earth did you do that? Please teach us so that no-one else EVER does that!
 
Thank the Lord you are ok. This is crazy. I can't imagine the series of event that set this in motion? I pray for your speedy recovery.
 
Had the blank and bushing on the mandrel and the last spacer bushing wouldn't go on because of a spot of glue. I turned the lathe on to hit it with sand paper as i've done many times but not with a blank on the mandrel. The next thing I knew the mandrel was woopin up on me. Bet I won't do that again. Feel like a real dumb ###. Thanks for the well wishes.

At great cost to yourself, you are providing the rest of us (who are wise enough) with an additional margin of safety. This is a reminder that disaster happens quite unexpectedly and usually very quickly, with no time to react. We have to be PROACTIVE to be safe. When you are able, can you share details of the event so we can take the lesson one step further?

I hope you heal quickly and have no lasting damage to your body. Thanks for the lesson.

Dog Gone, Dudley, Sorry to see something like that glad to sree at least you are OK enough to take pictures. It's amazing how fast something that you think will be OK to really turn to hell.
The cut and skin will heal, But me thinks you're goin to need a new mandrel. I know, not funny!!
Write it off as a painful lesson learned, I know I've learned my share that way.

I've done that to my mandrel, but I was lucky enough not to get hit.
A change of shorts is all it cost me.
In my case, the tailstock wasn't locked down tight, so it moved
back a tiny bit as the lathe was spinning. That backed the live
center out of the end of the mandrel, which left it free to whip
around at will. (another reminder not to use mandrels that don't roll
perfectly flat on the table)
Painful lesson for you, but a good reminder to the rest of us.
Glad it wasn't worse!
 
It had not occurred to me that a mandral would do this, without the tailstock live center in place. It does make sense now that I think of it; the inertia of the blank at high rpm.

Dudley,

Some things became apparent to me a long time ago.

1. I never use a full length Mandrel only turn half a pen at a time.

2. I house the end of the mandrel 3/8 of an inch in the live centre using a brass slip fit.

3, The head stock end of the mandrel with a threaded insert is locked into the other end of the head stock.

I have raised these thoughts many times and do so now so when you recommence if it would assist with pics etc on a pm basis feel free to contact me.

Now for where you are now my thoughts are with you in healing you are in my prayers, been through the Valley myself recently getting back to strength as we speak reviewing my safety practices, yesterday was my close to age Sisters 80th birthday giving me cause to build new dust extraction systems etc. I use extensive blood thinners and your bruising I have endured many times for me it looks worse than it is the bruising part. Talk to me if I can share other safety ideas in the shop.

that looks like it hurt bad. glad it wasn't worse. Makes me glad I started turning between centers and don't use mandrels any more except 1 as a pin chuck occasionally. 1 less way I can hurt myself.

Many "accidents" are caused by failure to "think ahead" I had never thought about a mandrel going that far off track! Now, I am REALLY glad I use Johnny CNC center to center bushings. About all I currently use a mandrel for is finishing, with his delrin finishing bushings. I guess it could even happen there as I turn at HIGH speed when doing ca/blo.:rolleyes::confused::eek: I am all too "A-fib" familiar with the cumadin/warfarin thing! Get well soon!

Dudley I hope that you heal quickly with no lingering affects. I used to do the same thing without anything on the mandrel lucky for me I learned about turning one at a time or that could be my arm. Take care.

Man, that hurts just looking at it!

I'm wishing you a speedy recovery, Dudley!!! I'm guessing, SHMBO, will have you on lock down.......no more shop time for awhile!

Take a rest, enjoy Thanksgiving and the up coming Christmas holiday.....

Dudley: You are a fortunate man. Sorry it happened to ya, in the first place. BUT! Thanks for sharing with those of us who sometimes forget!!!
 
the extra weight of the blank created enough centrifugal force to bend that mandrel and whoop your arm. sure hope you are okay, or at least will be okay. good lesson for the rest of us as said.

Thank you all for your support. I change the bandage every day. looks like it's healing nicely. The laceration doesn't hurt as much as the brusing all around it. Thanks again ya'll.

We can be dumb can't we.

I'd tell you how dumb you are if 4 !/2 years ago I had not stuck my hand into the blade of a 10 inch table saw. But, since I did I'll just say you ought to be a bit more careful around rotating machinery.
 
Yes, Painful lesson.
Back in 1971 while I was a high school shop student, the teacher was helping us drill a hole through a bowling pin we had peeled and turned to make a lamp. He used a length of 3/8" threaded lamp rod (in the drill press) with notches ground in one end to make a long drill bit. When he started the drill press the hollow lamp rod began to whip around. We did not have a starter hole in the bolwing pin to hold the rod while starting it. I got away with a bandaid on my arm.....lesson learned.

Also from looking at the front edge of your lathe it looks like
its been hit a few times with pretty good force.
Please be careful its not fun getting hurt like that at our age.
