I have been using the Mandrel Saver from PSI and like many have found it necessary to crank on the tail stock pressure to keep it from slipping. However, I recently tried using small neoprene O-rings between the bushings and spacers, basically wherever metal-to-metal could slip and that did the trick. Much less pressure needed to successfully turn the blank.

I bought one of those things a while back. The surging and "crinkle cut" from the slippage was so agrivating that I stuck the stupid thing in a drawer.

I may try to find it and try your method, the o ring makes perfect sense.

Tom could you post a close up so we can see? Im thinking it is between the saver and last bushing.

I place an O-ring between the saver and the adjacent spacer, between each bushing and the adjacent spacers, and between the spacer and tailstock. Anywhere there is metal-metal contact, except between the blank and the pen bushings, of course. I don't use the spacers that came with the mandrel, instead I prefer slimline bushings as spacers, they are longer and I only need one on each side of the bushings. That's a lot of O-rings but I only need to take off a couple to get the blank off of the mandrel. I use am currently using Danco 96750 #36 O-Rings, I bought a whole pack of them for less than $3 at Lowes, they have an ID of 3/16" and are a snug fit on the mandrel.
