I wanted to make something for my girlfriend for her birthday, but I wanted to make something that I have never made before, so I started to search youtube and found the nice lidded box. One sixteen minute video and off the the garage I went. I made this out of some spalted maple that has been laying around for awhile. I'm happy with it, especially for the first time making one of these.

Great work, nice proportions, good finish.
The true tests are:
1) The fit of the Cap to the Body, it should "Pop" when removed.
2) The smooth bottom of the Body.
Looks Terrific, A Superb Gift.
Congratulations,
Brian

Thanks for the comment. The cap has a nice little pop to it, and the bottom it nice and smooth. I sanded it to 600 grit and buffed it with EEE polish like I did to the whole piece.

That's pretty deep hollowing!

What tooling did you use?

I used my long bowl gouge. It was a real pain in the butt. The inside of the bottom part is about 3" deem and about 2" wide. This is a pretty small piece. The over all size of it is about 5" tall and a little over 2 1/2" wide.

Wonderful little turning! Nice proportions and finish...these little guys make perfect gifts as they can be used for sooo many purposes and are not so big that people just put them away and never use or show them. Looks like maple... Thanks for sharing and safe turning to you!
